Arctic terns

Baby arctic tern

The snow did not stop some of the
youth from hiking!

Sabbath, February 8, 2014

We were pleased to meet together this Sabbath morning for study and worship. Our Sabbath School began with prayer by Sister Ashleigh Holt and song service led by Brother Michael Brown. Following this, the young people left for their Sabbath School, and the adults remained for their continued study on the sanctuary, led by Sister Ann Ford.

The Youth Sabbath School began with prayer and then the continuation of the science demonstration by Pastor Allen Stump on pH and vinegar. He showed us a raw egg with its shell dissolved by vinegar. The nature nugget was about the Arctic tern and its migration from the Arctic to the Antarctic and its return to the Arctic every year. We applied this to the long journey of God’s people to the promised land. We then studied a lesson on the journey of Ellen White from Round Grove, Illinois, to Waukon, Iowa, a distance of about three hundred miles, in winter. She, her husband, and two other men left in a two-horse sleigh, crossed the Mississippi River with one foot of water over the frozen surface and traveled several days to Waukon. Upon arrival they found Brother J. N. Loughborough employed in construction and the group of Adventists discouraged and quite unhappy to see Brother and Sister White. However, God’s Spirit worked in a mighty way, so that hard hearts were softened and people again became determined to spread the three angels’ messages. In fact, Brother Loughborough returned with the Whites to Illinois. Elder White reported in the Review and Herald of January 15, 1857, that the meetings in Waukon were “the most powerful we had witnessed for years, and, in many respects the most wonderful we ever witnessed.” This journey of Elder and Mrs. White under perilous conditions and in the freezing cold of winter was applied to us and the long journey we are on to the heavenly Canaan. You may view the slides of these presentations here.

Another promise for our children: "As for me, this is my covenant with them, saith the LORD; My spirit that is upon thee, and my words which I have put in thy mouth, shall not depart out of thy mouth, nor out of the mouth of thy seed, nor out of the mouth of thy seed’s seed, saith the LORD, from henceforth and for ever" (Isaiah 59:21).

The Worship Hour began with prayer and an opening hymn. Brother Leon Holt offered intercessory prayer, and then Pastor Allen Stump shared a message entitled Rest for the Restless. One of the key points we learned in this message is that the rest God has for his people does not equate to simple inactivity. We also learned that the biblical understanding of confession is not simply an acknowledgment of wrong doing, but having a mind about sin like God thinks and to hate sin. We saw how God wants to provide spiritual rest in Christ, as Jesus mentions in Matthew 11:28 but for that rest to be realized, we must yoke up with Jesus. The yoke, interestingly, is an instrument of work and service. You may hear an audio copy of this sermon here. You may view Pastor Allen’s sermon slides here.
