Pictures from the Youth Sabbath School

Smyrna News

The glass rod appears different in the water than
in the air because of refraction. The refraction index
of water is about 1.33.

The Pyrex glass rod becomes almost invisible in cooking oil
because the oil and the rod have almost an identical
refractive index.

The pyrex rod does not appear visible through the oil, but
reappears in the water.

Sabbath, December 14, 2013

Winter does not officially begin in West Virginia for a few days, but it was feeling like winter this last Sabbath. Despite the threat of snow or freezing rain, all of our local believers were able to press forward and attend Sabbath Services.

Sabbath School began with prayer and song service and then separated into adult and youth divisions. The adults, following a devotional by Brother Michael Woodward and sharing and intercessory prayer by Sister Ann Ford, continued their study of the only begotten Son of God, led by Brother Michael Brown.

The youth first viewed a science demonstration by Pastor Allen Stump on “Seeing the Unseen,” using oil, water, and a glass pyrex stirring rod. Our Sabbath School lesson was on David and Jonathan, and before and after it we had object lessons on telling the difference between true and false friends, with Jesus being our best friend, and on the friendship between Winston Churchill and Alexander Fleming. Perhaps next week we can share the stories of Faole and of Kata Ragoso. You may view the slides for today's Sabbath school here.We invite you to join us for Sabbath School, starting with song service at 9:15 a.m. EST.

At worship we certainly were glad to have our pianist back, and we sang with glad hearts. After a congregational hymn and prayer by Brother Leon Holt, Pastor Stump spoke on "Fighting the Enemy." This sermon discussed our enemy, the devil, and how each Christian must be engaged this fight. The good news is that Satan's power and time are limited and that he is weak and puny compared to God or Christ. The slides for this important sermon can be accessed here. The audio version of the sermon can be accessed here.

Those who are loyal to God, keeping all of his commandments, will meet a spirit of opposition similar to that which David encountered. Learned men, proud and boastful in their supposed superiority, will feel, as did Goliath, to despise the little band who are loyal to God. (Ellen White, The Signs of the Times, March 4, 1886, par. 9)

The LORD that delivered me out of the paw of the lion, and out of the paw of the bear, he will deliver me out of the hand of this Philistine. . . for the battle is the LORD’s (1 Samuel 17:37, 47)

Thank you for listening to our services, for we are blessed to have you join us, and may the new week be filled with God’s presence.

We invite you to join our online and telephone conference services each week--Youth Sabbath School at 9:40 a.m. EST Sabbath morning, Worship Service at 11:00 a.m. EST Sabbath Morning, Story Hour at 7:00 p.m. EST Monday, and Prayer Meeting at 7:00 p.m. EST Wednesday. May God richly bless you until we meet again.
