Sabbath, November 30, 2013

As we started our Sabbath day together, we first invited God’s blessing on our meeting and then shared in a song service as we opened Sabbath School. We are very happy to have brothers and sisters who are not able to be present in the chapel join us for song service via the Internet classroom, and we invite you to do the same. Just follow the link on the Smyrna homepage for Sabbath services.

Brother Michael Brown continued the adult Sabbath School lesson on the divinity of Christ, and the young people continued their lesson on the early years of David, focusing on the defeat of Goliath. Sister Elaine Nailing shared a health nugget with the youth about how wonderfully our bodies have been made, including the marvelous way the brain, heart, bones, and ears work. Pastor Stump shared a demonstration on Hebrews 4:12. The youth also learned about when monkeys were first introduced into the Tropic World section of the Brookfield Zoo and how they did not know how to climb trees or swing from branch to branch because they had never experienced doing so while living in cages. Smaller monkeys were even terrified of the gorillas, but they all soon learned to live well in their new environment, and applications were made to us as growing Christians and to David as he learned the lessons God was teaching him in preparation for his new environment at the palace. You may view the slides for today's Sabbath school here.

Worship was a little simplified due to a lack of musical accompaniment, but the spirit of worship was held in good stead. Pastor Stump spoke on fighting the good fight of faith, explaining the principle of the cooperation between the human element and the divine in the process of the plan of salvation. His slides for this important sermon can be accessed here. The audio version of the sermon will be posted soon.

Those who are loyal to God, keeping all of his commandments, will meet a spirit of opposition similar to that which David encountered. Learned men, proud and boastful in their supposed superiority, will feel, as did Goliath, to despise the little band who are loyal to God. (Ellen White, The Signs of the Times, March 4, 1886, par. 9)

The LORD that delivered me out of the paw of the lion, and out of the paw of the bear, he will deliver me out of the hand of this Philistine. . . for the battle is the LORD’s (1 Samuel 17:37, 47)
